Community Garden Volunteer

Community Garden Volunteer

Do you have a green thumb and a passion for community? Our vibrant Youth Centre in Gateshead is looking for a dedicated volunteer to nurture our community garden. This isn't just about weeding and watering; your work will directly create a tranquil, therapeutic outdoor sanctuary for our young people to escape stress, build social skills through teamwork, and develop a sense of pride in their environment. By managing the day-to-day upkeep—pruning, planting, and harvesting fruit and vegetables—you are actively creating a healthier, happier space for local youth to thrive and grow.

Join our fun, fulfilling team and make a tangible difference in Gateshead. We need someone for 4-6 hours a week (flexible hours between Tuesday and Thursday). Whether you are an experienced gardener or just eager to learn, if you have a strong work ethic and want to foster a nurturing environment, we want to hear from you. Please note: This role requires an enhanced DBS check, and preference will be given to those already on the DBS Update Service. Come grow with us and turn your passion into a positive force for young people!

Role Description

Purpose of the Role The Community Garden Volunteer plays a vital role in sustaining the outdoor environment of our Youth Centre. While the Youth Worker retains overall responsibility for the garden’s design, planting strategy, and integration with young people, the volunteer will ensure the garden remains tidy, healthy, and productive through regular hands-on maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Garden Maintenance: Carrying out essential tasks including weeding, pruning shrubs and plants, watering, and monitoring overall plant health.

  • Cultivation Support: Assisting with the planting, care, and harvesting of fruit, vegetables, and herbs.

  • Site Upkeep: Keeping paths clear, managing compost bins, and ensuring tools are safely used and stored.

  • Collaboration: Working alongside the Youth Worker to report on the garden's condition and assisting in preparing beds for seasonal changes.

Person Specification The ideal volunteer will have a genuine love for gardening and a proactive approach to maintaining outdoor spaces. Experience with growing produce is advantageous but not essential, provided you have a strong work ethic and a desire to learn new horticultural skills. Because the garden is located within the centre grounds, contact with young people is likely; therefore, candidates must embody our centre's values of respect, inclusivity, and community spirit.

Hours and Requirements This role requires a commitment of 4-6 hours per week, with flexibility available between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, during the day. As the safety of our users is paramount, the successful applicant will be subject to a DBS check, and preference will be given to those who already hold a valid DBS certificate.
